Title:  Step-designable electrochemical technology with alternating potentials for treatment of antibiotic production wastewater
Abstract:
Pre-treatment of antibiotic production wastewate is very important to improve its biodegradability and reduce the risk of resistance genes. A novel alternating current electrochemical was proposed, and this technology has a remarkable effect on the degradation of antibiotics. In 60 minutes, over 90% of antibiotics are removed with BOD5/CODCr increased more than two times. Ameliorative mass transfer and rapidly refreshing surface are presumable mechanisms for enhancing antibiotics removal. The pretreatment of alternating current electrochemical reduce the toxicity of antibiotics on activated sludge, and decrease its inhibition on cell activity. Finally, considering the intended use, the performance of alternating current electrochemical was validated in actual antibiotics. The results of pretreatment are not only achieved in terms of removal and biodegradability, but also in reduction of resistance genes’ accumulation in biochemical units. This study provides a new way to resolve the conflict between mass and charge transfer in the electrochemical oxidation of positively charged pollutants, and provides a convenient and reproducible method for the electrochemical pre-treatment of recalcitrant antibiotic production wastewater.
