Title: Antibacterial nanocomposite scaffolds of Chitosan, Carboxymethyl Cellulose and Zn & Fe integrated Hydroxyapatite (Chitosan-CMC-FZO@HAp) for biomedical applications
Abstract:
The nanocomposite scaffolds are being explored for different biomedical applications including bone tissue engineering. However, the desired degradation and non-antibacterial behaviour are the major challenges for the researchers. In this regard, nanocomposites offer the flexibility to develop multifunctional biomaterials. In the present study, we first designed Fe(III) doped ZnO integrated hydroxyapatite ZFHAp nanoparticles followed by preparation of the natural biopolymer-based chitosan- carboxymethyl cellulose-ZFHAp scaffolds. The physical and chemical properties of the prepared nanocomposite were characterized. The swelling and degradation of the prepared scaffolds were linearly related. The presence of  ZFHAp in the scaffolds enabled tuning of the pore size and degradation behaviour. The scaffolds with 5 % ZFHAp (SCA-5) exhibited self-antibacterial activities along with excellent cell proliferation ability. The present study designates the SCA-5 nanocomposites as plausible scaffolds for bone tissue engineering.
